The 450,000 sf, 11-story West Wing Addition is the largest construction project at Sparrow Hospital in two decades. With some of the buildings on the campus dating to the 1950s, the design concept creates a unified contemporary appearance.
This 7-year phased construction began with the erection of a 1,200 car parking deck. The creation of a new main entrance/lobby that serves as a welcoming connection from the new parking structure to the existing hospital followed. When complete, the
addition will house six operating rooms with adjacent patient prep and recovery areas. The first floor space will house a new Emergency Department which will include 75 treatment bays. The third floor will be a new 34-bed ICU/CCU department and the fourth floor will house Cardiology. The fifth and sixth floors will have new patient beds. The floors above will be shelled out for future expansion.
A new central utility plant with related utility tunnels is also being build on the campus to accommodate the greater electrical demands of the new tower, as well as to replace aging equipment.
