Kintsugi Village transforms a long-vacant Catholic school in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood into a dynamic, mixed-use campus dedicated to community wellness, creativity, and education. The renovation honors the original structure while introducing new layers of purpose—supporting local families, artists, and entrepreneurs through thoughtful, inclusive design.

Kintsugi Village was envisioned as a space where community, culture, and creativity converge. The founders aimed to cultivate an ecosystem that supports early childhood education, culinary arts, creative expression, and holistic wellness. Rooted in inclusion and designed for impact, the project invites people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, grow, and heal together through shared experiences.

Natural and wellness-focused materials were chosen throughout to support a wide range of community needs. The first floor houses an early childhood education center with classrooms surrounding a central play zone. The second floor includes wellness studios, artist and ceramics studios, gallery space, and a makerspace. On the third floor, a flexible event venue and culinary kitchen open to a rooftop patio with city views—perfect for community gatherings, celebrations, and food-based programming.

The name Kintsugi comes from the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, highlighting cracks rather than hiding them. This philosophy shapes the spirit of Kintsugi Village—embracing history, imperfection, and the power of transformation. Early design concepts for the building’s exterior reflect this philosophy, layering old and new materials in ways that highlight the historic building. The final design incorporates a mural inspired by the history of Corktown and the former St. Vincent Middle School building.
