Neumann/Smith Architecture, one of Michigan’s most distinguished design firms, is pleased to announce the recent achievements and successes of four employees.

Melanie Johnson has been promoted to an Associate of the firm. Melanie has served as the firms Executive Director since 2013, and has over 30 years of financial reporting and accounting operations experience. Her career includes a range of experience for public corporations and small businesses. As Executive Director, Melanie manages a diverse set of business and financial management responsibilities. Synthesizing operational and performance data, she provides strategy and direction for Neumann/Smith and works in close collaboration with many of the firm’s long-standing clients. Melanie graduated from LaGrange College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.
Mark Westphal, Associate AIA, earned his architectural license. To obtain this license, Mark had to pass the Architect Registration Exam and complete the Intern Development Program (IDP). The IDP is approximately 3 years of on the job experience consisting of training units in 16 different categories. The Architect Registration Exam evaluates candidate’s knowledge, skills, and ability to provide the various services required in the practice of architecture. Mark is a Project Architect at Neumann/Smith with 10 years of experience. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.
Colleen O’Leary, LEED AP ID+C, received NCIDQ Certification. Colleen recently completed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination for professional licensure in interior design, which promotes the health, life safety, and welfare of the public by establishing standards of competence in the practice. An Interior Designer at Neumann/Smith, Colleen has worked on a variety of projects creating efficient and productive solutions for clients. She is a LEED Accredited Professional for Commercial Interiors and a member of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). Colleen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from Michigan State University.
Brittany Bachteal, LEED GA, received NCIDQ Certification. Brittany recently completed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination for professional licensure in interior design, which promotes the health, life safety, and welfare of the public by establishing standards of competence in the practice. An Interior Designer at Neumann/Smith, Brittany presents a passion for the subtle and refined details of design, which reflect each client’s individual personality. She is a LEED Green Associate and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from Michigan State University.
