preservation meets community banking
MSUFCU Congress Branch
MSUFCU’s Congress Branch in Detroit’s historic Marquette Building redefines the banking experience by blending financial services, workplace functionality, and community engagement. The thoughtfully repurposed space offers semi-public areas for education and connection, preserves historic character, and supports local impact—creating a welcoming hub for members in the heart of the Historic Financial District.
vision
MSUFCU’s mission is to create open, welcoming spaces that challenge the norms of traditional banking. The Congress Branch brings this mission to life by prioritizing service, education, and accessibility in the heart of Detroit. As the credit union’s 23rd location, the branch follows a cohesive set of brand standards developed by our design team, while integrating the historic character of the Marquette Building. The renovation also introduces a flexible community space that supports financial seminars and events for both current and future members.
detail
The branch’s distinctive two-story layout gave our team the opportunity to introduce semipublic spaces that encourage member and staff flexible use. Throughout the space, the original brick was carefully restored. The main level features semi-private teller stations. Materials like glass partitions, drop-ceiling systems, and custom graphic wallcoverings create an open environment while maintaining necessary levels of privacy. The lower level offers private offices, a pergola conference area, and an employee fueling station.
secret
Many MSUFCU branches offer large community event spaces for financial classes or exclusive member events and each one is designed to fit a grand piano. This location’s versatile space in the lobby of the Marquette building can accommodate 64 seated guests and offers a kitchenette, standalone bar, and audiovisual set up, and toilet facilities.
