NMU Northern Center
A welcoming, front door to campus, the building serves Northern Michigan University and surrounding region as a first-class conference and event center for community members and students to meet, study, and socialize. To increase student traffic to the facility, the student enrichment and organization space was redesigned for enhanced visibility. A student activity zone was also created for students to socialize outside of class. The new exterior facade constructed at the main entrance, creating a significant identity, and showcasing the activity within.

Northern Michigan University envisioned a reimagined student center that would serve as both a gateway to campus and a vibrant hub for the Upper Peninsula community. The goal was to transform the aging facility into a modern, first-class conference and event center that would draw students in, elevate campus life, and foster meaningful connections between the university and region.

The revitalized design features upgraded conference and meeting spaces, a flexible pre-function zone for networking, and improved circulation throughout. To encourage daily student use, enrichment and organization spaces were reimagined with greater visibility and access, while a dedicated activity zone invites students to relax and socialize between classes. A new exterior façade redefines the main entrance, offering a bold new identity for the Northern Center and elevating its presence on campus. Behind the scenes, building systems, accessibility, and code compliance were also fully updated.

The concept of events on display was a central driver of the Northern Center’s redesign. By replacing solid exterior walls with expanses of glass, the renovation created a strong visual connection between the activity inside and the campus beyond. The new façade offers passersby a clear view into the energy of student life, from informal gatherings to major events, making the building a beacon of engagement and a dynamic reflection of Northern Michigan University’s identity.
