May 19th, 2025

Meet the 2025 Recipient: Basma Elsheikh

We’re thrilled to announce Basma Elsheikh as the 2025 recipient of the Kenneth Neumann Design Scholarship.

Basma earned her Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Central Florida and is currently pursuing her Master of Architecture at the University of Michigan. Her dedication to both academic and professional growth is evident through her leadership roles—currently serving as Vice President of the AIAS University of Michigan Chapter and formerly as President of the AIAS Chapter at UCF.

In her application, Basma described architecture as “a passion and a vehicle for meaningful impact,” sharing her ambition to “push the boundaries of architectural innovation, focusing on community-driven design solutions.” Her perspective reflects a thoughtful commitment to design that uplifts and connects—values that align with the spirit of Ken Neumann.

As this year’s scholarship recipient, Basma was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and a summer internship with the Neumann/Smith team, where she’ll gain hands-on experience in a collaborative studio environment. Her portfolio impressed our selection committee with its creative vision, refined execution, and compelling storytelling.

We’re excited to welcome Basma to the team this summer and look forward to supporting her continued growth as a designer and leader in the profession.

Basma Elsheikh

“As a female first-generation immigrant, my experiences have inspired me to integrate social justice and cultural representation into architecture. I believe that design should reflect the unique cultural and social contexts of the communities it serves. Too often, architecture neglects marginalized voices. I am committed to changing this by ensuring that my designs foster inclusivity, equity, and cultural expression. My goal is to create spaces that empower individuals, honor cultural heritage, and promote social cohesion.”

Celebrating the Legacy of Kenneth Neumann, FAIA

At Neumann/Smith Architecture, we believe that design has the power to shape not only the built environment but also the next generation of architects. In honor of our founding principal, Kenneth Neumann, FAIA—a visionary architect, mentor, and advocate for design excellence—we established the Kenneth Neumann Design Scholarship through the Michigan Architectural Foundation to support emerging talent and honor Ken’s legacy of mentorship and innovation.

Ken dedicated his life to the pursuit of design excellence. As a founding partner of our firm and a recipient of the AIA Michigan Gold Medal, AIA Detroit Gold Medal, and the Martin Luther King Social Justice Award from Ferris State University, he inspired countless architects with his passion for architecture, belief in big ideas, and mastery of color, shape, texture, and contrast. He was a gifted storyteller, an advocate for thoughtful detail, and a tireless mentor to young professionals.
