Reflecting on Juneteenth

June 19th, 2026

Honoring History, Uplifting Community

Each year, Juneteenth offers an opportunity to recognize an important milestone in American history and the enduring significance of freedom. It is a time when communities come together to celebrate culture, honor the past, and continue conversations about equity and opportunity.

At Neumann/Smith, we recognize the role the built environment plays in shaping how people connect, learn, and engage with one another. We are fortunate to work with institutions and organizations that foster those experiences every day, creating places that bring people together and serve their communities in meaningful ways.

Among them is the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Imagery at Ferris State University—an impactful project that uses the objects of oppression to teach tolerance and confront the history of racism in America. Scheduled to open in Fall 2026, the museum’s new standalone facility will expand its ability to educate visitors, preserve its growing collection, and support meaningful conversations about race, history, and social justice. We are honored to contribute to a project that advances understanding and encourages dialogue through the power of place.

Upcoming Juneteenth Events

As we reflect on Juneteenth, we also celebrate the vibrancy of our communities. Here are just a few of the events taking place at or near some of our project sites this week:

Friday, June 19

These events are a powerful reminder that community, equity, and culture are essential parts of the places we help shape. We remain committed to building spaces that reflect the values of belonging and shared history—not just today, but every day.
