vision

The City of Dearborn envisioned a modern transit facility that would enhance regional connectivity, support economic development, and serve as a welcoming gateway to the city’s cultural and educational assets. With support from state and federal grants, including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the project aimed to create a high-performance, passenger-focused station rooted in historical context while meeting 21st-century infrastructure needs.

detail

The architectural design is a contemporary interpretation of classic small-town rail stations, blending modern functionality with historic sensitivity. The use of masonry and glass throughout the structure reinforces a sense of permanence and place, while limestone detailing, Romanesque barrel-vaulted entryways, and metal hipped roofs nod to traditional railway architecture. The station includes rail and bus platforms, bridges, and site linkages to The Henry Ford and other local destinations—designed with a focus on durability, accessibility, and long-term community value.

secret

The Wayne County Roads Commission 0-4-0T 7 train was installed through a custom-designed opening on the transit center’s west side. A doorway and two adjacent panels fully open to allow just enough clearance for the train to roll inside on temporary tracks. Display cases highlighting the center’s history were also brought in through this flexible access point.
