a place to learn, live, and connect
NMU The Woods + Northern Lights Dining
Students living on campus today expect more than just a place to sleep—they seek a vibrant, supportive environment that promotes academic achievement, personal development, and social connection, with access to modern amenities and spaces that cater to their diverse needs. The Woods Student Residence Hall Complex redefines student life at Northern Michigan University, fully immersing students in the “UpNorth” culture while offering a true home away from home.
vision
Located directly adjacent to the main academic core, The Woods Student Residence Hall Complex was conceptualized to foster connection and community. The complex was designed to provide student support with multiple housing options, diverse lounge and study spaces, dedicated classroom spaces and a student success center. While supporting over 1200 students, it was vital that the scale of the complex is not overwhelming to the student. The design team used the “The House Model” by creating six residence halls or “houses” that feed into a connective main street that leads directly to the academic core- encouraging interaction, support and community.
detail
The 351,000-square-foot student residence complex consists of six residential halls accommodating 1,200 students, each connected to a central main street and anchored by “The Lodge” at the south end. The Lodge serves as a communal space, featuring a fireplace, seating areas, student art displays, and outdoor seating. Each hall is equipped with shared kitchens, laundry facilities, and front desk services. Connected to the Northern Lights Dining facility, the dining hall offers a variety of food options, including vegan and gluten-free choices, supporting both student community and well-being.
secret
Many Northern Michigan University graduates choose to remain in the Upper Peninsula, drawn by its strong sense of community, outdoor lifestyle, and growing opportunities in industries such as education, healthcare, and tourism. To support this desire, the design team chose to incorporate the “UpNorth” design aesthetic which is characterized by a blend of rustic charm and modern functionality. With a deep connection to the natural landscape, featuring materials like wood, stone, and metal, reflecting the region’s rugged beauty and outdoor lifestyle, students are immediately welcomed home.
