The Z Deck + The Belt
The Z Deck is more than just a parking structure—it’s a bold fusion of art, culture, and urban energy. Spanning an alleyway named the “Belt,” the deck features 130 murals, created by 27 local and international artists, transforming the space into a public canvas. With vibrant nightlife venues, art galleries, and restaurants, the Z Deck becomes a dynamic hub, where parking, retail, and art converge to create a premier destination. It’s not just a place to park; it’s an immersive experience.

The design concept embraces the potential of the space between. With portions of the parking structure located on property diagonally from one another and bisected by a public alley, the design team embraced the challenge and created a parking deck that spanned over the alley on the upper levels thereby creating the “Z”. The alley space between, seemingly so pragmatic, was transformed into one of the City’s most unique destinations. Conceptualized as a collaboration between a prominent local art gallery (and Z Deck neighbor), the surfaces of the parking deck become canvases, immersing the visitor in works of art.

The Z Deck is a 10-story, 535,000-square-foot parking structure that spans a city block, providing over 1,275 parking spaces. The building includes 33,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, contributing to a vibrant streetscape on all four sides. The structure features a three-dimensional façade designed as an abstract “picture frame,” which complements the artwork displayed within. Glass-enclosed staircases and elevator towers at the corners provide clear wayfinding and enhance safety while showcasing pedestrian movement. Additional amenities include ticketless and cashless entry, EV charging stations, and badge access for monthly parkers.

The secret behind the Z Deck’s design is its use of murals. Each level features artwork by a different artist, making the parking experience more engaging. Not only does this add a creative touch, but it also helps drivers easily remember which level they parked on. It’s a simple yet effective way to blend art and functionality.
