revitalized student hub
WSU Student Center
After 40 years of serving students, Wayne State University’s Student Center underwent a transformative renovation to become the new “living room” of campus. The revitalized facility now serves as a vibrant, multifunctional hub that brings together learning, social connection, and student services under one roof. With expanded programming and contemporary design, the updated Student Center supports WSU’s broader goals around student recruitment, retention, and community building.
vision
The renovation focused on creating a warm, inclusive, and dynamic student environment that reflects the diversity and energy of WSU’s campus. The updated design prioritizes flow, flexibility, and access to natural light—making the Student Center a destination where students can meet, collaborate, and recharge throughout the day. A more cohesive interior plan, along with improved signage and circulation, ensures students can easily find and access the resources they need.
detail
The renovation introduced a bright new south atrium, a redesigned food court, and a grand ballroom for university-wide events. Modern collaboration spaces, flexible meeting rooms, and expanded lounges support student engagement and connection. Recreation zones on the lower level, including gaming and dance practice areas, offer space to unwind. Two new feature staircases improve circulation throughout the building, while relocated administrative offices and updated interiors enhance functionality, wayfinding, and overall student experience.
secret
One of the guiding ideas behind the renovation was the concept of “events on display.” The design intentionally opened up previously opaque areas of the building with large expanses of glass, creating visual connections between interior activity and the surrounding campus. A massing study highlights these transformed areas, which now serve as vibrant, transparent moments that invite curiosity and showcase the energy of student life within.
