Student-Centered Transformations in Higher Education
When it comes to student center design, the choice between renovation vs. new construction isn’t a simple one. Budgets constraints, energy efficiency goals, and maximizing space all have an influence on shaping the right solution. Just as important is how the space will serve its community. A student center acts as the heart of campus, a welcoming entry point for visitors, and a reflection of the university’s values and identity.
At Neumann/Smith, we’ve helped colleges and universities across Michigan navigate these decisions with care. Whether updating an existing student union or designing something entirely new, our work is centered on creating welcoming, adaptable environments that support learning, engagement, and well-being. Our in-depth, in-person collaboration with students, faculty, and staff ensures that every design decision reflects the people who use the space every day. Highlighted here are projects that demonstrate impactful evolution in student centers across the state.
Northern Center
Originally constructed in the late 1950s, the Don H. Bottum University Center had long served as a regional gathering place. The building lacked the modern amenities, appeal, and identity needed to match Northern Michigan University’s evolving vision. Neumann/Smith worked with the University to reimagine the space as a welcoming front door to campus and a premier event destination for the Upper Peninsula.

The renovation introduced a bold new exterior façade to establish a strong sense of arrival and to showcase the energy within. Inside, outdated conference and public areas were upgraded to support large-scale events, student gatherings, and community use. Student enrichment spaces were made more visible and accessible, while a new student activity zone invites relaxation and connection outside of class.
By eliminating deferred maintenance, modernizing building systems, and enhancing both the function and feel of the space, the Northern Center has been transformed into a dynamic, multifunctional venue that supports student life and strengthens NMU’s role in the wider community.
James C. Renick University Center
Originally renovated by Neumann/Smith in 2004, the Renick University Center has once again been transformed to meet the evolving needs of the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s predominantly commuter campus. The latest renovation reimagines the first floor as a dynamic environment for academic and social connection.

Bold branding, flexible collaboration zones, and enhanced student services bring visibility and energy to the heart of campus life. Key features include a fireplace lounge, orientation room, and photo-worthy backdrops. Each shaped by input from students and staff to support community, transition, and celebration.
The renovation also redefines staff workspaces, creating a more collaborative and hybrid-friendly environment by consolidating administrative and career services. Together, these updates position the Renick Center as a vibrant campus hub that strengthens identity, connection, and student support at UM-Dearborn.
WSU Student Center
After serving students for over 40 years, the Wayne State University Student Center underwent a transformative renovation to become a true “living room” for campus life. The reimagined space brings together learning, student services, and social connection in a cohesive, modern environment designed for flexibility, flow, and inclusivity.

Key improvements include a new south atrium, redesigned food court, expanded lounge and collaboration areas, and a grand ballroom for large events. A major expansion of the Student Veteran Resource Center—now one of the most robust in the state—provides dedicated space designed by veterans, for veterans. Enhanced wayfinding, natural light, and circulation improvements make the building more functional and inviting, supporting WSU’s goals around recruitment, retention, and student success.
Student Center Design
Effective student center design balances functionality and identity. These buildings must support a wide range of activities while reflecting the unique character of the institution. To meet these goals, design must think across disciplines, blending architecture, interior design, branding, and student development.
Placemaking plays a critical role in shaping the student experience. Outdoor areas like plazas and courtyards serve as social anchors and often become the backdrop for major milestones. These spaces foster a sense of community and contribute to the visual identity of campus.
Retail and hospitality functions such as bookstores, markets, and dining areas create a sense of familiarity and comfort. These zones encourage informal connection and contribute to a welcoming atmosphere that reflects campus culture.
Workplace strategy is often woven into the background, but it’s essential for supporting academic success. Student services, advising suites, and faculty offices are designed for visibility, accessibility, and collaboration, helping to remove barriers and promote engagement.
A guiding concept in our contemporary student center design is “events on display.” Rather than concealing activity behind walls, transparency and open layouts offer a view into campus life in action. Passersby can see student clubs gathering, events unfolding, or exhibitions being installed. This visible energy invites participation and reinforces the center’s role as a place for everyone.
The most successful student centers are those that grow with the institution. They tell its story, embody its values, and remain flexible enough to support changing programs and needs. As designers, our role is to translate these goals into spaces that serve the full rhythm of campus life.
